When next in Dubai, do yourself a favour and check in or make a trip to the Palace in Downtown Dubai. Inside this amazing hotel you will feel like an Arab Sheikh, as it looks like something out of the Prince of Persia films. After our spa treatment at the hotel we made a reservation for their signature buffet restaurant known as 'Ewaan'. Ok so for those who know me, I am not really a 'buffet' kind of person; it may come as a surprise (not) but I am pretty particular and buffets often mean over-cooked or cold meals that way too many people stick their hands in. But this is Dubai, and this whole city has very high standards that at times have been even higher than my own! I'm glad to say that this was one of those occasions.
Walking into the restaurant you can instantly see the cleanliness and quality of the entire buffet. At any time you can spot no less than 5 chefs hats wondering around because all of the hot food offerings are either cooked endlessly during the entire dinner service of made fresh to order! For a girl who loves carbs all it took was the 15 offerings at the bread counter and dips to get me started and all of a sudden I turned into Veruka off 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'. I had a spring in my step as I passed through the aisles of delicious food singing her famous song in my head. 'I want the world... I want the whole world; cream buns and donuts and fruit cakes with no nuts!" My plate was filling up way too quickly...
The cold salad bar was stocked full of offerings from every culture you could think of. The cold seafood around the ice sculpture included fresh oysters, lobster, prawns, mud crab claws, house smoked salmon to name just a few. Then there was the hot seafood options; prawns and calamari cooked fresh on huge skewers on the hot coals, a huge whole fish and seafood chowder. "...I want the whole world!" After the cold cuts and cheeses we went onto the meats; Chicken shawarma, delicious lamb sishkebabs, a carving station with peppered roast beef, lamb, duck and of course a homely roast chicken. Sitting centre stage though in a large round copper pan was a traditional delicious slow-cooked Middle Eastern lamb; our favourite of the night (and many other peoples favourite too it seemed). The meat literally fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. It was served with a a traditional rice adorned with peas and intense middle eastern spices and tempered with a yoghurt sauce. You also had the option of the chef cooking you a fresh pasta to order, bolognaise or seafood marinara? What more could you ask for? Oh yes, dessert! "Give it to me now..."
The dessert station was another stand out. Finish your fifth plate of mains and try to come up with something (anything) sweet that you may feel like for dessert; chances are it is right there! Beside a vibrant fresh fruit basket and sophisticated cheese board there was a range of various different types of individual cakes and tarts, larger torts by the slice, biscuits, chocolates and of course a melted chocolate fondue with all the additions... literally everything! Always keen to try other cultures Gianni made his way over to the 'date station'. Not to find another wife (haha), these were dried dates The dates were a stand out as well as had never tried dates like these before! We couldn't stop eating as everything tasted so incredible.
It is rare to find a buffet that takes so much pride in producing quality food as well as focusing on the details to ensure its tasty and luxurious. Ewaan really does give you a feast fit for a king or should I say Queen!
