Entrecote: The French Do It Better

We have very high standards when it comes to perfectly cooked steak; to be honest, more places seem to get it wrong than right! It's a shame as we have such amazing quality beef in Australia (just head overseas for a month and we promise you will miss a juicy eye-fillet). We were however pleasantly surprised when we visited Entrecôte in South Yarra, who's kitchen is run by Chef, Simon Moss.

Entrecôte is the french word for steak, but if you didnt' know that before you came, one look at their menu would inform you. The main focus is their french style steaks; nothing too complicated and not much variety but hey, if you do something perfectly there is no need for alternatives!

We did have our reservations, expecting the potential soggy fries or overcooked steaks which seems to happen way too often for our liking! Alas we were happily proven wrong. Our steak arrived medium rare and well rested with a delicious French sauce called ‘sauce au beurre herbs de la mason’ (we don't speak French but we think that translates to something like buttery herby deliciousness). We finally know why Manu is always asking for sauce because they sure give you a lot in France! For those who can't stomach a whole heap of butter it may be a good idea to ask for the sauce on the side or in a jug; we happily devoured ours though because it went perfectly with the chips which were proper french fries, crispy and fresh, exactly what we wanted. We love the saying ‘stick to what you know best’, and we believe this is exactly what Entrecôte has achieved.

We then of course had to try some traditional French desserts; starting with a creme brûlée. Honestly, it was the best brûlée that we have had in Melbourne! The flavour and texture of the custard was perfect and there was plenty of burnt sugar on top so nobody missed out. It was the real French deal; close your eyes and you would think you were in Paris. We also sampled their signature lemon tart, which evoked the same response and same emotions. Profiteroles were also a nice sample to share!

We highly recommend this beautiful little dainty restaurant to anyone who appreciates a good drop with some quality steak and fries and French food at its finest.
